Finding a Hotel in Havre, MT

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Havre, Montana.

Enjoy the rolling prairie scenery and slow-paced lifestyle of small-city living in Havre, Montana. A railroad town that was incorporated in 1893, Havre is the site of many significant historical events that have helped to shape the political and cultural landscape in Eastern Montana. History buffs flock to Havre to explore important spots like the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump and Fort Assiniboine, as well as the nearby Bear Paw Battlefield, which was the location of the battle that ended the Nez Perce War of 1877. Havre is also considered the gateway to East Glacier National Park.

Havre is a true Wild West frontier town and this is particularly evident when exploring Havre Beneath the Streets, a tour of Havre’s historic–and traditionally seedy–underground mall , which includes an old-fashioned saloon, three opium dens, a Chinese laundry, a barber shop, a drug store, a bordello and several rooms used during prohibition to smuggle alcohol. The underground mall is the closest peek visitors will get at the historic legacy of the town, after a fire in 1840 destroyed most of the original above-ground buildings.

ORIENTATION

Havre is located in north-central Montana, not far from the Canadian border where the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan meet. Havre is best accessed via vehicle–it’s 114 mi (184 km) to Great Falls and 248 mi (400 km) to Billings. The Havre Airport offers a few flights to Billings and Lewistown.

WHERE TO STAY

Havre is a town that got its start as a railroad stop, and these days visitors will be pleased to discover that the current town center still revolves around the Amtrak station on Main Street. It’s here that travelers will find the most of what Havre has to offer, including its best restaurants, bars and shops, plus the town cinema. A number of smaller hotels and motels are available in this area, including the El Toro Inn, a Spanish-style hotel offering true western hospitality. Amenities include a complimentary breakfast, high-speed Internet access and on-site laundry. Other options in the town center include the independently-run Siesta Motel.

West of downtown also offers plenty of amenities, especially at the Townhouse Inn, a large hotel featuring an on-site casino and an indoor pool. Restaurants are within walking distance. On the east side of Havre, a few brand-name chain hotels line Highway 2. Accommodation options in south Havre are limited, but the Sears Motel–situated close to the Montana State University-Northern–provides a number of affordable rooms and also has camping facilities for outdoorsy types. An on-site gift shop and car rental office round out the amenities at this motel.
